Morning work, "do now", bell ringer...do you use these routines in your classroom? These systems for checking in with your students can be extremely useful tools for both you and your class.
How does Morning Work help you as the teacher?
Morning work questions can target review, current skills, or future skills. We know our curriculum can seem rushed throughout the schol year and we need to make sure our students are remembering what they learned yesterday, last week, or last month. Morning work questions can let you know when your students need to review an old skill. You could ask your students to add 2-digit numbers, read a clock, count some coins, and write a fraction in just a few minutes at the beginning of your math class. From just this small amount of data, you will see if your students need reteaching, more practice, or an extra challenge.
How does Morning Work help your students?
A variety of morning work questions are an excellent way to check in on multiple skills in just a few minutes. Your students will also have a routine built in at the start of your class that will get their brains focused on the subject. They will be reminded of skills they have already learned and have the opportunity to ask questions and get extra practice.
